If you are planning on travelling between Waihi and Paeroa tonight or tomorrow night, you might have to change your plans or take the long way home.

Asphalt road resurfacing is planned to take place on State Highway 2 through Karangahake Gorge from 8pm to 5am, closing the road.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is advising motorists to plan ahead to avoid resurfacing hours.

The NZTA says the works are weather permitting and will occur between Albert Street, Mackaytown and River Road, Karangahake Village with SH2 closed to through traffic between Paeroa and Waihi.

'Detour options are to the north – via Hikuai and Kopu – an extra hour and 20 minutes. Or to the south – via Tauranga and Matamata – an extra hour and 45 minutes.
