Papamoa sand scuttle an event for all

The Lee and Silvester family are taking part in the Papamoa Sand Scuttle to raise funds for the new surf club building.

A Sand Scuttle will be taking place in Papamoa on March 30, as a fundraiser for the new Papamoa Surf Club building.

Event director Ellie Reed says it's family focused fundraiser.

'There hasn't been a running or walking event along Papamoa beach yet which is pretty cool for all the residents.

'We're encouraging whole families to come down, there are distances of ten kilometres, five kilometres, two kilometres and a crab scuttle, so there is something for everyone.”

Ellie says the event has a focus around environmental sustainability.

'Instead of medals we are donating a dune plant to Coastal Care for every entry and they will be planted along Papamoa Beach.”

To fit in with the focus, there will be no cups at the event and discounts will apply to people who bring their own cups to Sandbank Coffee.

Ellie encourages the Papamoa community to get behind the event as the surf club and surf life savers play a vital role in keeping people safe across their long stretch of beach.

'Being in a family that uses the beach, for me it's about showcasing Papamoa, especially in a growing community.

'It's a great opportunity to put the Papamoa Surf Club in the limelight and show people who they are and how much they actually do.

'They have a massive season from October until March and they are all volunteers. They do incredible work and they are desperate to get a new building.”

As part of their community project, the Papamoa Rotary are donating a mobi-chair to the Surf Club to allow wheelchair users to access the beach.

Ellie says it is important for participants to stay around for the prizegiving as a $1000 prezzy card will be up for grabs.

'For anyone who enters the ten, five or two kilometre races, their names will go into a hat which will be randomly selected.”
