Progress made after truck causes power outage

Contractors have made steady progress as they worked through heavy rain repairing Powerco's damaged electricity network in Waihi today.

A truck brought down tree poles and caused significant damage to overhead and underground equipment in the crash which occurred about 6.30am.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh says it was hoped 100 of the 130 customers affected in the commercial and industrial area of the town would have power back on by 6.30pm.

'Despite the heavy rain, linesmen have been able to replace the poles and work is continuing on replacing damaged lines and other assets,” he says.

Downer had 16 staff working on the repair work including a team drafted in from Matamata.

'The remaining 30 customers should have supply restored by the morning.”

Phil apologised to the affected customers and urged anyone without power to contact their electricity retailer if they hadn't already done so.
