A cyclist has died after a crash on Te Puke Highway yesterday, Tuesday 9 April.
Emergency services were called to the crash, between a car and a cyclist, around 4:50am yesterday.
The 66-year-old cyclist was taken to hospital at the time but sadly died last night, says a police spokesperson,
"Police offer their sympathies to his friends and family at this difficult time.
"The investigation into the crash is continuing."

WHY no off road cycle lanes as space permits

I can't get my head around the NZTA and local authority roading engineers refusal to have as mandatory, the installation of cycleways OFF the carriageway. I believe this section of road was recently upgraded yet they choose NOT to take advantage to make our roads safer, to safe lives. As a glaring example, in Tauranga authorities have Route K and an extension up to Pyes Pa Road with extensive grass berms yet they spend $8 million on over and across bridges (for few cyclists) which could provide many kilometers of 'safe off road' cycling for commuters.
