SH29 closed following serious crash

UPDATED 2.44PM: State Highway 29 is closed following a serious crash in the Lower Kaimai area.

"Emergency services are attending a serious crash on SH29, Lower Kaimai, Western Bay of Plenty, says a police spokesperson.

"The two-vehicle crash was reported to Police at 2.20pm.

"SH29 is currently closed and diversions are in place. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

"The Serious Crash Unit has been advised."

The crash is located between Omanawa and Ruahihi roads.

Detour route is not suitable for Heavy vehicles. Eastbound Traffic: Left onto Poripori Rd, continue onto Crawford Rd, continue onto Wairoa Rd, Right onto SH2, Right onto Moffat Rd, Right onto Cambridge Rd, Left onto SH29. Westbound Traffic: Right onto Cambridge Rd, continue onto Moffat Rd, Left onto SH2, Left onto Wairoa Rd, continue onto Crawford Rd, continue onto Poripori Rd, Right onto SH29.

Reports are coming in of a serious crash on SH29.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says two vehicles have crashed on the highway, just past Omanawa Road.

"It looks like a truck and ute have crashed.

"Police are at the scene. It looks pretty serious."

Motorist are being advised to avoid the area if possible.

An alert from the NZTA says the road is closed and people should follow the directions of emergency services.
