There is plenty for everyone to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, in Tauranga Moana. Here's what's coming up in the seven days ahead:

Concerts, workshops and learning for adults:

  • 22 Pipiri: Raranga workshop – learn the art of weaving and create a bracelet or basket out of harakeke (flax). Info
  • 22 Pipiri: Workshop: Māori poi making – poi were used by early Māori as a way to keep their hands flexible for flax weaving, and as a training tool. Learn to make one yourself! Info
  • 23 Pipiri: Toi Whakairo: the art of carving – a demonstration to learn about the cultural origins of whakairo (carving) and common bone carving designs. Info
  • 26 Pipiri: Te Papa: Naboth's Vineyard? Towards Reconciliation in Tauranga Moana – a lecture by historian Dr Alistair Rees. Info

Exhibitions:

Opening on Rāhoroi 22 Pipiri (Saturday 22 June) at the Tauranga Art Gallery:

  • Hā: Lewis Tamihana Gardiner – this pounamu artist is considered a leading contemporary figure in jade carving; known for his ability to produce work on a large scale as well as smaller intricate items. Info
  • 'Blood Water Earth' by Louise Potiki Bryant and Santee Smith – an immersive video installation and ceramic display arising out of an international indigenous collaboration. Info
  • Mātiro: A survey of photography by Kapua Joy Bennett – a retrospective of black and white photography from the 1970s -1980s. Info

Still showing:

  • Ruahine by Michelle Estall – an exhibition of artwork based around contemporary Māori Ruahine, inspired by the writing of Te Iwa Makere Tamaki. Info
  • Mātātoa – Mumu Returns – an exhibition of Taonga Pūoro artist Mumu (Will Moore). Info
  • Te Whānau o Matariki – an Incubator Gallery group exhibition by established and emerging artists gathered as a family under the Matariki star. Info
  • Matariki Hao Tāngata – a retrospective of black and white photography from Kapua Joy Bennett, at the central library. Info

For the tamariki (kids):

  • 22 Pipiri: Matariki Toi Rāhoroi – a fun and creative craft session on the theme of Matariki. Info
  • 22 Pipiri: Matariki e-Sewing session – learn about electrical circuits, and sew a stuffed toy star that lights up. Info
  • 23 Pipiri: Workshop: Contemporary Māori art for children – fun contemporary Māori rock art with a twist for kids. Info
  • 24 & 25 Pipiri: Matariki Glow Show – a large-scale puppet show perfect for tamariki aged 3-10, with magical glow-in-the-dark characters from Māori myth and legend. Info

Matariki fun for the whole whanau:

  • 23 Pipiri: Matariki kite day – a traditional way to celebrate Matariki is through the flying of kites – manu tukutuku. Join us for this popular annual event at Fergusson Park. Info
