Man charged with murder after BOP shooting

UPDATED 2.19PM: A 53-year-old man has been charged with murder in the Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

The charges are in relation to a death after shooting in Rotorua last night.

A police spokesperson says he has been remanded in custody until 19 July.

The murder accused will appear in the Rotorua High Court next month.

EARLIER:

Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a 39-year-old man in the Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services were called to a property in Mangakakahi, Rotorua, just before 8pm, after a report of a shooting.

A police spokesperson says one person was confirmed dead.

"A short time later a person sought by Police in relation to the incident was located at a nearby address and taken into custody.

'The man is in custody in relation to the incident but has not yet been charged.

'Guards were in place overnight at two scenes in the Mangakakahi area and scene examinations continue today.”

Police say more information will be released as it becomes available.
