Continued growth for WBOP and Tauranga city

Both Tauranga city and the Western Bay have seen continued growth in construction activity during the first six months of 2019, according to a report by Priority One.

The report says the combined Tauranga/Western Bay sub-region issued 4.5 per cent more building consents by value than at the same time last year.

'Individually, Tauranga has picked up a little from last month but is still 0.8 per cent behind the same time last year, however Western Bay has continued its recent growth and is now 26.5 per cent ahead of value.

'Tauranga is currently holding steady, issuing $67.5 million over 198 consents during June. This was a similar value to last month but a drop in the number of consents issued. The value and number of consents issued for residential new builds was slightly down, however commercial consents picked up from last month to reach $23.3 million.

'Western Bay district has recorded its second strong month in a row for building consents issues. While the value and number of consents was down on last month's tally, it issued a new two year high value of government/community consents.

'At $5.7 million for seven consents, this included large consents for work on Te Puna hall and for a new sports pavilion and library at Western Ave, Omokoroa.”

June 2019 summary – Tauranga City:

Total value was $67.5m, slightly more than the $67.3m issued last month and also ahead of $58.7m in consents issued in June 2018. The two-year high was $113.2m issued in May 2018, while the low over the same period was $45.5 issued in December 2018.

Total number of consents issued was 198, less than last month's 236 but slightly more than the 193 consents issued in June a year ago. The two-year high was 268 consents issued in July 2017, while the low was 130 consents issued in December 2017.

Single/multi dwelling consents were valued at $34.2m, less than last month's $42.2m and the $34.4m in consents issued in June 2018. The high over the last two years was $75.5m consents issued in November 2017, while the low was $22.2m issued in December 2017. The number of consents issued was 75, less than last month's 97 and the 80 consents issued in June 2018. The two-year high was 134 consents issued in both July and November 2017, while the low over the same period was 51 consents issued in December 2018.

Commercial consents were valued at $23.3m, more than last month's $17.8m and the $19.1m in commercial consents issued in June 2018. The two-year high was $68.7m in consents issued in March this year, while the low was $7.8m issued in November 2017. There were five large commercial consents issued: for a factory/office development at 81 Gargan Road; for the 1st stage of a superstructure at 61 Chapel Street; for an office building at 190 17th Ave; for an office/warehouse development at Tauriko Business Estate; and for a retirement village at 718 Grenade Street.

The number of commercial consents was 15, less than last month's 29 and the 20 consents issued in June 2018. The two-year high was 66 consents issued in October 2018, while the low over the same period was 13 consents issued in February 2018.

Government and community consents were valued at $4.3m, more than last month's $1.2m and the $1.8m issued in June a year ago. There were two large consents issued: for works to Baywave Aquatic Centre and for the fit out of teaching labs at the University of Waikato campus. The two-year high was $25.2m in consents issued in July 2018, while no consents were issued in January 2019. There were seven consents issued this month, more than last month's five and the two consents issued in June 2018. The two-year high was 15 consents issued in July 2018.

June 2019 Summary – Western Bay of Plenty district:

Total value of consents was $26.5m, ahead of last month's $36.8m but less than the $17.5m in consents issued in June 2018. The two-year high was $40.7m in consents issued in February 2019, while the low was $12.5m in consents issued in April 2019.

Number of consents was 130, less than last month's 144, which was the two-year high, but more than the 108 consents issued in June 2018. The two-year low was 68 consents issued in December 2018.

Single/multi dwelling consents were valued at $15.2m, less than last month's $21.4m, which was the two-year high, but more than the $10.7m in consents issued in June 2018. The two-year low was $8.7m in consents issued in April 2019. The number of consents issued was 38, less than last month's 49 but more than the 29 consents issued in June 2018. The two-year high was 51 consents issued in September 2017, while the low over the same period was 19 consents issued in December 2018.

Commercial consents were valued at $688k, less than last month's $11.5m and the $2.5m issued in June 2018. The two-year high was $16.8m in commercial consents issued in February 2019, while the low was $30k issued in August 2018. The number of commercial consents was four, less than last month's eight and the same number as issued in June a year ago. The two-year high was 10 consents issued in July 2017, while the low was one consent issued in both August and September 2018.

Government and community consents were valued at $5.7m, more than last month's $125k and the $650k issued in June 2018 and marking a new two-year high. There were two large consents issued: for work on the Te Puna hall and for a new sports pavilion and library at Western Ave, Omokoroa. No consents were issued in the category in February, March or May 2018. The number of consents was seven, also marking a new two year high.
