Highway to remain closed following large slip

State Highway 2 through the Waimana Gorge will remain closed as contractors continue working to clear a significant slip that occurred last Thursday.

This slip is located between Stanley Road and Fraser Road.

NZ Transport Agency's Bay of Plenty System Manager Rob Campbell says we had our contractors inspect the site over the weekend and this morning and found the hillside is very unstable.

'There is around 3000sqm of materials above the road that is still moving and will need to be removed by drilling into the hillside and then blasting the remaining materials.”

'We expect to start drilling by Wednesday however, the weather plays a big part in what we are able to do and with the weather report forecasting more rain this may change."

The Transport Agency will continue to provide updates via social media and the NZTA website and expect the road to be re-opened in around 3 weeks.

Further details will be provided end of this week.

The NZ Transport Agency thanks road users for their understanding and patience.

"We ask all motorists to use the alternative route and allow extra time for their journeys."

The detour is via Whakatane, Ohope and Wainui and is clearly sign posted.

Golly gosh, here we go again,(CON) TRACTORS inspected it over weekend, i can see by looking at picture, that had they just got 8 truck and trailers in there and a decent digger that could be opened in a day or so,the metal could be stored for further work, worst thing to do is blast it, (looking after their mates) if they kept cleaning up road the rest would keep falling down, another digger sitting over barrier could keep pulling it down till it stopped falling, BLASTING IT will make it worse and bring the lot down,BENCHING IT would be the thing to do and it would take the stress off the rest, anyway what would i know being old and worked on these things and have a good brain nobody listens, this is going to be drilled on wed, it could have been cleared by now,Thanks Sunlive 10-4out.phew.
