Serious crash on SH1 and SH29 Karapiro

A serious crash involving two vehicles has occurred on Saturday afternoon in the South Waikato at Piarere near Lake Karapiro.

The crash appears to have happened just before 1.30pm at the intersection of SH1 and SH29, Karapiro.

Police report that two people have been injured.

A SunLive reader who is travelling through the area reports that there are multiple Police, ambulances and fire services at the scene.

'It's the worst scene I've seen in a while. It's a serious crash. There are five fire trucks, six Police cars and three ambulances and people are trapped.”

The site is a main intersection on the Thermal Explorer Highway for traffic flowing between Cambridge, Hamilton, Tauranga, Tirau and Rotorua.

NZTA have advised that due to the crash on this section of the highway, the southbound lanes are blocked. Motorists are advised to expect delays up until 4.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier, it was unknown if there are serious injuries however one car is covered in tarpaulins while emergency services staff work underneath it.

i would say at least %60 of drivers dont know how to use this junction
