The re-opening date for the Waimana Gorge in the Eastern Bay of Plenty has been extended.

The gorge was set to be re-opened on Friday July 26 and has now been pushed back to Monday July 29.

The gorge closed on July 4 due to a slip has been shut ever since. The NZTA says progress is being made to clear the slip and at this stage they are remaining hopeful that the sloop will be cleared by Monday.

'Contractors have made great progress with around 500m3 of material removed from site over the past few days.

'Further blasting is needed to remove the rest of the material threatening to fall on the road. 16 out of the 23 holes needed have been drilled and completed on the hill side.

'The rest of the drilling will be finished this week and then we can do the final blasting before re-opening next week.”

The detour remains via Whakatane, Ohope and Wainui and is clearly sign posted.
