A 23-year-old man appeared this morning at the Whakatane District Court facing one charge of assault.

The charge comes after a 45-year-old man was stabbed at a Hydro Road address.

He died of critical injuries.

Judge Christopher Harding granted interim name suppression to the man accused of his death.

The man has been remanded in custody until his next appearance on October 30.
