Firefighters are currently attending a scrub fire that has broken out on Kairua Road, Welcome Bay.
Fire and emergency northern communications shift manager Colin Underdown says one crew is currently in attendance.
'The fire is 30x30 meters.”
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says they could see large plumes of black smoke coming from the Kairua Road direction when they were coming over the Maungatapu Bridge.
"It looked pretty big."
