Waipuna Hospice is encouraging people to donate time, talents or resources for Giving Tuesday.

This is the first time the hospice has been involved in the initiative.

Waipuna Hospice marketing and communications manager Amandeep Kung says they wanted to support the global initiative.

'It's a good way to highlight different ways in which people can contribute to charities and global issues.”

She says they are always looking for volunteers for events and appeals as well as in their six charity shops.

At the moment they need volunteers for their Remembrance Tree appeal.

'The Remembrance Tree runs until Christmas and we need volunteers to help man the trees. They'll help people write a special message to put on the tree in exchange for a donation.”

Volunteer shifts for the tree appeal are two hours at a time wherever the trees are throughout the community.

'We have all sorts of campaigns and events happening throughout the year so we're always needing volunteers, especially in our shops as well.

'We've got so many different types of volunteering roles that people probably don't even know about.”

Amandeep, people probably don't realise that they have service or skills that would be useful to the hospice.

If people apply to volunteer through the website the can say what area they are interested in volunteering in.

Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a simple idea that encourages people to do good.

It has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
