State Highway 2 will be closed at Ngatea from Tuesday, January 14, to 3pm Friday, January 24, to allow for resurfacing works aong the highway.

The NZ Transport Agency says the road will be eopening in both directions for Auckland and Waikato Anniversary holiday traffic.

The closure, between the Piako River Bridge and Dent Street, will allow the Transport Agency to improve the surface of the state highway, while Hauraki District Council will undertake upgrades to the kerb.

A signposted detour will be in place between the SH2/SH25 Roundabout and the SH2 / Hauraki Road Intersection.

The detour is expected to add approximately 10 kilometres or eight minutes to a journey.

Acting Waikato System Manager Rob Campbell says it's great to be able to coordinate these important works to improve State Highway 2 through Ngatea with Council, to minimise disruption from multiple projects to motorists and residents.

'Ngatea's CBD remains open for business and we are committed to ensuring customers have easy and safe access to all businesses during these works.

'There will be signposted routes via SH2 and Pipiroa Road to guide traffic to and from the Ngatea CBD while the closure is in operation.

'The full closure may need to be reinstated for a short period following the Auckland and Waikato Anniversary holiday weekend, depending on our contractor's progress.”

Following the completion of the full closure a one-way detour will be in operation for east-bound through traffic between the SH2 / SH25 Roundabout and the SH2 / Hauraki Road Intersection for the remaining stages of the project, currently scheduled for completion in late April.

Rob encourages motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

'The Transport Agency acknowledges the inconvenience of these works to motorists and Ngatea residents, and thanks everyone for their patience.”

Real time information about the road closure, detour routes and travel times is available from the Transport Agency's Journey Planner website - journeys.nzta.govt.nz.
