Eli, nine-months-old, remains in Waikato Hospital. Eli's brother, Riley, wasn't in the vehicle but has lost his much loved Mum and step Dad, says a post on a givealittle page set up to raise funds to support the two boys.

'We would like to make special mention of the members of the public and emergency services that did their very best to help Chris, Brenda and little Eli at the scene and afterwards,” says the couple's family in a statement from police.

'You are our heroes and you have our undying heartfelt gratitude for all that you do.

'The sudden tragic loss of Chris and Brenda has left us all devastated beyond measure.

'We would like to thank everyone that has donated to Riley and Eli's givealittle page, we are humbled by the generosity you have shown us.

'Riley is with family and Eli is still in Waikato Hospital where he is receiving outstanding care and is surrounded by family. We are pleased to report he is improving every day.
