Four new cases of COVID-19 in the BOP

There are four new cases of COVID-19 in the Bay of Plenty today.

The total number of cases in the Bay of Plenty District Health Board area is now 36, with the number of cases in the Lakes District Health Board region remaining at 12.

The four new cases are in the Western Bay of Plenty bringing the total to 35, the Eastern BOP still has one case according to the latest information from Toi Te Ora Public Health.

Western and eastern Bay of Plenty are covered by the Bay of Plenty District Health Board and the Lakes District Health Board covers Taupo and Rotorua.

Rotorua has eight cases of COVID-19 and Taupo has four.

There are a total of 54 new cases in New Zealand today, made up of 32 confirmed cases and 22 probable cases. This brings the total number of cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand to 1160.

A total of 12 people are in hospital including four in intensive care says Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield.

Of the people in ICU there is one in Wellington, one in Waitemata, one in Counties Manukau and one in Southern. One of these patients is in a critical condition.

"One person has been discharged from hospital since yesterday."

So far 241 people have recovered from the virus.

Ashley says 42 per cent of the cases are linked to overseas travel, while 41 per cent of the cases have links to confirmed cases.

Around two per cent is from community transmission and Ashley says the balance is still under investigation.

The ethnicity breakdown of the confirmed cases is:

  • European or other: 73.3 per cent.
  • Asian: 8.5 per cent.
  • Unknown: 6.9 per cent.
  • Māori: 7.8 per cent.
  • Pacific peoples: 3.4% per cent.

For privacy reasons, neither the Bay of Plenty District Health Board nor Lakes District Health Board are able to provide any further details on any COVID-19 inpatients, a BOPDHB spokesperson says.
