Heavy rain and strong winds to lash BOP

The MetService has issued a severe weather watch for heavy rain today.

Heavy rain is being forecast for the Bay of Plenty for the next three days.

The MetService has issued a severe weather watch for heavy rain for the region, west of Te Puke.

'A strong, moist easterly airstream, ahead of a deep low over the Tasman Sea, is forecast to bring rain and easterly gales to the upper North Island from later today until Friday morning,” says the MetService.

'People are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings in case any changes are made, or further areas are added.”

There is also a strong wind watch in place for the Kaimai Range.

HEAVY RAIN WATCH

Area: Bay of Plenty west of Te Puke

Valid: 24 hours from 3am Thursday to 3am Friday

Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.

Area: Auckland north of Whangaparaoa Peninsula

Valid: 14 hours from 9pm Wednesday to 11am Thursday

Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, with possible downpours Thursday morning. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.

Area: Ranges of Gisborne north of Tokomaru Bay

Valid: 20 hours from 3pm Thursday to 11am Friday

Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.

STRONG WIND WATCH

Area: Northland

Valid: 15 hours from 3pm Wednesday to 6am Thursday

Forecast: East to northeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places during this time.

Area: Auckland

Valid: 17 hours from 9pm Wednesday to 2pm Thursday

Forecast: East to northeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places during this time.

Area: Waikato near the Kaimai Range, and western parts of Coromandel Peninsula

Valid: 24 hours from 11pm Wednesday to 11pm Thursday

Forecast: Easterly winds may approach severe gale at times.
