A man is in Waikato Hospital with serious leg injuries after 1.5 tonnes of steel pipes fell on him.

The TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the Whakamarama area on Thursday morning, following reports of the incident.

A spokesperson for the rescue helicopter says a 65-year-old Tauranga man had 1.5 tonnes of steel pipes fall on him, resulting in serious injuries to his lower leg.

"He was flown to Waikato hospital for specialist treatment due to the nature of his injuries."
