Excitement builds as anglers are counting down to the opening of the trout season on October 1.

Rotorua lakes Okataina, Rotoiti and Tarawera will be the destination of hundreds of enthusiastic trout fishers.

The lakes have been closed to boat fishing since the end of June and while other lakes are available for trout fishing, it is these three lakes locally that provide an opening day thrill for anglers.

Fish & Game remind those intending to venture out that this is the time to engage in some early season preparation.

Servicing or checking that the boat and trailer are ship-shape, topping up the tackle box with some new lures and checking the lines plus renewing the fishing licences will all ensure the opening day goes smoothly!

Fish & Game will be carrying out surveys on the lakes on October 1 as part of their monitoring and anglers will be asked how their day had gone, how many fish they have caught for the day and their catches will be weighed and measured.

Matt Osborne of Fish & Game says it's one of the most popular days of the whole season. 'It's a wonderful day for families. People get out on the lakes enjoying the great outdoors combined with the opportunity to catch a trout”
