Mount Maunganui park targeted by vandals

It's proving hard to dissuade skateboarders from using the concrete spaces at Te Papa o Ngā Manu Porotakataka, formerly Phoenix Car Park.

About 40 metal studs, designed to stop skateboarders, have been pulled out, resulting in damage to the concrete seating verge.

Mount Mainstreet's cleaner Dean Wright says skateboarders have been pulling them out.

'I've seen them doing it during the day,” says Dean.

'They just bang them out or use pliers. I've picked up a pair of pliers that have been left on the ground.”

As well as the studs being extracted or bashed out, the drain grates have been lifted.

'I came in two Saturdays in a row and half of the grates were pulled out. People walking across in the dark – if they didn't see, they could get very serious damage.”

He says the large grates over the drain on the road next to the bus stop have sometimes been moved too.

'They pull them out and if you got out of the bus and didn't look…”

As well as being the cleaner 30 hours a week, starting about 5.30am, Dean puts up the Christmas decorations and takes a special pride in the town and the shopkeepers.

'I work for Mount Mainstreet and I'm proud of it.”

Dean says the skateboarders try to get in to use the park on a Sunday afternoon as soon as the market has ended at 1pm, but arrive earlier, creating pressure for people going to the market.

'While the skateboarders wait, they skate up and down outside the toilets, making it very hard for people at the market to go to the toilet, because the skateboards are going flying.”

The concrete along the ground has patterned marks etched into it, which Dean says was designed to discourage skateboarding.

Damage to the concrete after the metal studs were knocked out.

The extensive metal stud damage around the outer rim of the park has been happening over the last month, but Dean says the damage to the concrete in the inner area of the park has been going on longer.

'They've been ripping them out. The other day the sign was also graffitied, not by the skateboarders but by the fella who did the 25 tags uptown two months ago. It's the same colour paint.”

Dean says council staff came and cleaned up the graffiti. Council staff have also been to inspect the park damage with Mount Mainstreet manager Mandy Gillgren.

'I have been over there the last few weeks with council and am so disappointed in the damage,” says Mandy. 'The new sign was tagged, the concrete has been damaged extensively from skateboards, the grills are moved at night time, cones are put out over there and the park was scribbled with chalk.”

Mandy says community spaces should be respected so everyone can use them as intended.

'The damage to the concrete benches could be a real hazard especially for a young child and it just makes a brand new space look tattered,” says Mandy.

'I'm a skateboarder from when I was a kid and this is not a good look for our town. I skateboarded but I didn't vandalise,” says Dean.

'I'm really disappointed,” says Mandy.

Top soil and grass seed will solve the problem!

TCC built them a skatepark - what did they expect would happen? We all know these places attract undesirables! Yes GRASS IT - as we were promised originally - a 'green space'

AND sack those who designed the current 'mess'. 'Designers' ignored us completely and still are. Betcha the person behind the design is not a Kiwi. Betcha!

Yes, grass it, plant a dozen 'shade trees' or half a dozen shade sails a few bench seats, the old-fashioned ones with backs on so that people can actually 'rest up' and amire the scenery and then let US bring our picnic baskets whatever. That's all that's needed. Grass, some shade and some proper benches and then let us decide the rest on a day-to-day basis. Stop 'over-designing' crap that nobody wants.

Grass it. Would like to hear that they have been caught on video in the act and made to pay for the damage as well though.

Skate boarders are people and part of our Community Surf and Skate culture are the essence of the Mount. How about we allow them to use the park as it is for the whole community. Are they undesirable ? I don't think so. Come on Mounties if you are a true Mounty you would have skated back in the day.

Grassed off

Rate payers spent 2 million dollars creating a roller derby, and now there is a problem requiring more expensive repair. If we have to endure another brainless endeavour to improve the mount then the money would be better spent with a by election to get rid of the brain dead lot we voted in. Can't wait for the one way trail n Pilot bay another TCC *#???

Seeing as TCC made this mess they have now got to deal with the issues of their own making. Unfortunately with what has been built, there isn't much else that the space can be used for other than for the Skate Boarders who are making good use of it. Ask any person what they would like this space to be & the resounding answer would be a green space. I'm not sure why TCC don't listen to their Rate Payers and rectify their past mistakes??? TCC-Get up off your backsides, listen to the public's feedback and get on with sorting out these past mistakes before moving onto new ventures. Start justifying your pay, and what you have been elected for!!

Consensus

Pretty clear the overwhelming majority would prefer a relaxing green space and while we are at it, how about a new name that everyone can pronounce and knows what it means.

Film and find these vandals (police to do it) and put them in jail. Simple. It stops the problem. Yes expensive but short sharp shocks can do the job sometimes.

How about artificially grassing it? Then there is no need to maintain it and saves having to dump soil and sow grass etc.

Council planning at its best

I hate to say I told you so. What an idiotic thing to do, take out much needed carparks and replace with a skateboard park and then name it with a name most of us will never remember. I bet most people remember the Phoenix carpark.

Surf Beach

So let them skate! pull all the pathetic studs out. It was such a feeble idea driven by an elitist mentality that thinks skateboarding should be banned. Fascists. Lots of kids big and small enjoy the area. Skating there is no where near a problem, I lived walking distance away up until very recently and have seen what it’s like. The mount is a beach & surf focussed community. Always has been. Get a life or go live away from a beach if you disapprove or want to turn the mount into remuera or some other boring area. Btw there’s plenty of grass left in NZ. A few Low maintenance palms there would probably be nice though. Give the kids a break!
