Motorists are being advised to expect delays following a serious crash on State Highway 2 in Paengaroa this afternoon.

A police spokesperson says they were notified of the collsion between Mends Lane and Te Puke East Road at 3.50pm.

Initial reports indicate one person has sustained serious injuries and the road is closed, says the spokesperson.

"Traffic management is in place."

The person has crashed into a tree, says the spokesperson.

NZTA has issued an alert asking motorists to follow directions of emergency services

"Pass the scene wih care and expect delays."
