People from all over the country have come together to celebrate 100 years of hockey in Tauranga.

Tauranga Hockey general manager Clinton Butler says it is great people got together after not seeing each other for decades.

'There's definitely a reconnection - people who used to play against each other, particularly from the seventies, eighties and nineties.”

Clinton also enjoyed the old photos and memorabilia displayed in the pavilion so people got an understanding of the journey Tauranga Hockey has been on in the last 100 years.

The century celebrations spanned three days last weekend and the club took the opportunity to have an official opening of its third turf and rename the others.

The turfs have been named, Moana, Tahatai and Whanga to represent the connection to the ocean, coast and harbour.

Saturday was rounded out with masters' games and a celebratory dinner, Sunday saw the battle of the Kaimais.

The competition is a new concept and current Black Stick Amy Robinson played in the Tauranga senior women's team, the Tauranga team was beaten one-nil.

Under 16 and under 18 games were played between Tauranga and Waikato with Tauranga taking out both boys and girls in the under 16 games and both under 18 games were won by Waikato.

Former New Zealand goalkeeper Stephen Graham put on the pads for the first time in a while for the Tauranga senior men's team, the game was a one all draw but Waikato took it out during the penalty shootout.

Clinton says the weekend was very successful with great weather and great games as well.

'You're not only celebrating a 100 years of Tauranga hockey, but you're also rekindling those old friendships and reliving those golden days or glory days, when you hit the winning goal or you pulled off the amazing save.”
