Covid update here and around the globe

A Wellington border worker already in quarantine was one of six new cases of Covid-19 detected in the country on Saturday. The rest were all in managed isolation.

The worker was a close contact of Case B in the November quarantine cluster, which can be traced to an outbreak among New Zealand Defence Force staff.

Meanwhile, a bugbear feature of the Covid Tracer app will be stopped. Until now, users have been logged out of the app every 30 days for privacy reasons.

However, deputy director of heath Shayne Hunter said it recognised it did not need to be so restrictive in its approach and that removing the feature would improve its long term use.

Global toll

More than 57 million cases have been recorded around the world as of Saturday morning and more than 1.37m people have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The United States tops the list globally with more than 11.98m cases, and 255,098 deaths.

India has seen the second highest number of cases with more than 9m cases, while Brazil has reported more than 5.9m cases.

What should I do?

Anyone who wants to get tested can find their local testing centres by visiting the Ministry of Health website.

New Zealand, including Auckland, is at Covid-19 alert level 1.

Masks are now mandatory for: people travelling on public transport services in and out of the Auckland region, the drivers of small passenger service vehicles in Auckland, such as taxis and app-based ride services, and people travelling on passenger flights throughout New Zealand.

If you are sick, call your GP before you visit, or call Healthline on 0800 358 5453.

To avoid contracting and spreading the virus, wash your hands properly, cough and sneeze into the crook of your elbow and throw tissues away immediately.

Reach out, find support from people who care, connect with your community or help a neighbour in need.
