Firefighters are battling a large scrub fire near Hawai this afternoon.

Multiple appliances have been called to the blaze on State Highway 35 near Hawai in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Kaisey Cook says the blaze is roughly 200 metres wide and 30 metres long.

"There are two appliances currently at the fire, and three on the way."

NZTA says SH35 is closed.

"Due to a fire a section of SH35 is closed at Hawai. Follow directions of emergency services.

"No detour available. Avoid the area or delay your journey if possible."

SunLive is working to get further information and will update the story when possible.
