Woman accused of oar assault appears in court

Browning faces one charge of assault in relation to a January 23 incident in the Tairua Harbour.

A woman accused of hitting a man with an oar in a Tairua boat rage incident has appeared in court this week.

Catherine Maree Browning, 52, made a short appearance in the Thames District Court on Wednesday morning.

Browning faces one charge of assault in relation to a January 23 incident in the Tairua Harbour.

A man has also been charged over the incident.

Browning is applying for diversion and is next due to appear in April.

The altercation the charges stem from happened on January 23, in Tairua, and was widely reported in the media after a video which captured the incident was shared on social media.

The charges were laid in relation to an incident where a man in an inflatable pontoon dinghy became engaged in an altercation with another boatie.

A 58-year-old man has also been charged over the boating incident – with operating a boat dangerously and three counts of assault.

An interim recall was made to take him into custody and he is due to appear at Thames District Court this month, by audiovisual link.

...tempers flared, both sides behaved foolishly and probably regret it. Nobody was actually hurt (as I understand it...) Does it need long-winded Court action? I would have thought a meeting across a cup of coffee with apologies and consideration of fair reparations for damage to both sides, should settle it. These people are not REAL criminals.
