Traffic chaos on SH2

Tree felling works on State Highway 2 are causing a bit of traffic chaos today.

A reporter at the scene says they have been stuck in traffic for about 30 minutes and have moved about 500m in that time.

"Traffic is terrible on SH2 because of a stop/go for tree felling between Te Karaka Drive and Barrett Road.

"Northbound to Katikati it's backed up to Te Mete Road. South to Tauranga its backed up to Esdaile Road."

Waka Kotahi Transport Agency says the works are scheduled to be completed around 1pm.

Works are being carried out on the weekend to minimise the impacts on traffic, a spokesperson said earlier in the week.

"Stop/Go traffic management will be in place with a 30km/h temporary speed limit. Minor delays are expected and our contractors will be actively working to minimise these as much as possible.

"Please take extra care, reduce your speed and follow directions of traffic management staff and signage."
