Getting girls playing sport in BOP

The spotlight is continuing on women today with a Females in Sport Seminar taking place in Tauranga.

International Women's Day kicked-off the week on Monday, after the White Ferns and Silver Ferns showed off their sporting prowess on the weekend.

The two sports teams were originally due to play in Tauranga, but due to Covid-19 alert level changes, subsequent restrictions torpedoed the arrival of international class women's sport to the area.

But it is still Females in Cricket week at Bay of Plenty Cricket and as part of the event, the club is running a Females in Sport seminar today.

Despite the blow of losing the cricket and netball clashes, Bay of Plenty Cricket Women's Development Officer Rebecca Yee remains upbeat.

'What we wanted to do as part of our female cricket week was to have, not just an event for players, but something where coaches and administrators in female sport could come and have a space and an opportunity to discuss ideas,” Rebecca says.

'Things that have worked, things that haven't worked and maybe things we can try in our own different codes.”

The evening will host three speakers heavily involved in female sport.

These include Joanne Broadbent, head coach of the Northern Spirit cricket team, and Cory Sweeney, co-coach of the Black Ferns Rugby Sevens side.

Jake Ryan of Papamoa Cricket Club will also be speaking, somebody Rebecca lauds when it comes to increased female participation in the sport.

Jake will discuss his journey with girls' cricket in the Bay of Plenty and some of the success stories he has overseen so far, including Northern Districts' representatives and even a White Ferns prospect.

'It is just about finding more people to drive it. That is my focus now and that is my purpose at the seminar,” says Jake.

He is hoping to shine a light on his blueprint for success with girls' cricket, although he clearly believes anyone is capable of helping out.

'I don't really know how I did it I just kind of did it. It is just one of those things which took a bit of passion or a bit of drive.”

Whilst being run by Bay of Plenty Cricket, Rebecca makes it clear the event is open to people involved in any female sport.

'It's an open invite,” says Rebecca.

'So we are hoping other sports come along and we can share what we have done with them and see if they have got any great ideas on that topic because we are all about increasing female participation.

'We invite everyone to come along to a bit of a meeting spot to chat about our females in sport.”

The Females in Sport seminar, as part of Females in Cricket week, takes place at the Bay Oval Pavilion, March 9 from 6pm until 7.30pm.
