Police have arrested a man in Hamilton after an alleged firearms incident in Mount Maunganui last week.

Western Bay of Plenty Police announced last week that they were on the hunt for Aren Curtis after he allegedly fired a shot at police in the early hours of Friday morning.

A Police statement has confirmed that a 31-year-old male wanted in relation to this incident was taken into police custody earlier today.

'He was located at an address in Hamilton East this afternoon,” the statement reads.

Shortly before 3am Friday, police identified a man they believed to be Curtis, 31, driving a black-coloured Audi car in Mount Maunganui.

He currently has a warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear in court.

After failing to stop after being signalled by police road spikes were deployed and the vehicle came to a halt on Seaspray Drive.

It was at this point, whilst being chased on foot, that the man in question allegedly fired a shot in the direction of the pursuing officers.

The man arrested earlier today will appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow on a number of charges.

The police have done their work, let's hope to see it strongly supported by our judiciary and not interfered with by irrelevant mitigating statements. The time for setting community standards was years ago. Before we encountered a minister who wants to reduce prison numbers. Harsh prison treatment.... I'm all for it.

...and pointed out that he would inevitably be caught. If he hadn't run, he wouldn't have used the gun and he'd be in a whole lot less trouble than he is. I really hope some lessons are learned here. Using a gun, in this country, has to be seriously deterred. I think it has to be mandatory jail, but I'd like a better solution.
