Bay of Plenty Golf are celebrating this week after their Junior Girls won the Northern Girls Development Quadrangular tournament for the first time.

The BOP team defeated Waikato, North Harbour and Auckland in the handicapped matchplay tournament at Pakuranga Golf Club.

The team of Anya Apanui, Tania Ellis, Shaynee Biddle-Tai, Georgia Kaye, Hunter Edwards and Jenny Urbahn secured the maiden win for the region in the under-19s competition.

Manager Penny Smith could not be prouder of her team's efforts.

'The girls were awesome and had a lot of fun out there,” Penny says.

'You could just tell they were really enjoying themselves. They all got on really well and we just had a really good time.”

Battling what Penny calls some 'testing weather conditions” the team tied their first clash with Waikato before beating North Harbour in their second outing. A crucial win over Auckland in the final match saw BOP level on points with the hosts but claim an overall victory owing to that win.

'They all fought through and got an overall good result,” Penny beams. 'This event has been running for quite a long time. We got invited to play a few years back and this is the first time we have won it.

'They went out there and did amazing.”

Looking forward, Penny is now hopeful that the girls can go on to become potential stars as seniors, with this win hopefully an incentive for them to stick the sport out into adulthood.

'Some of these up and coming juniors it is very exciting to see them out there playing well and competing really well,” Penny admits.

'Obviously we want to progress them through to our senior ranks at some stage as well.”
