One person is dead following a crash in the Bay of Plenty.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on Waioeka Road at 4.53am.

A police spokesperson says a pedestrian has died in an incident involving a vehicle.

"Police are on scene working to determine the exact circumstances of what occurred."

NZTA says the highway is closed 6km south of Opotiki, due to the crash.

"This section of SH2 is likely to remain closed for some time this morning as NZ Police undertake a serious crash investigation.

"Please delay your journey or consider using an alternative route."
