The Desert Road is now closed due to snow and ice.
Waka Kotahi NZTA is advising that State Highway 1 is now shut between Rangipo and Waiouru.
A detour is in place.
'Please follow the detour and allow at least an extra 45 minutes travel time,” says a statement on Waka Kotahi's website.

SH4 National Park to Tohunga Junction (Ohakune) is now OPEN, but SH1 Desert Rd remains CLOSED with a detour via SH4 National Park. Please drive to the winter conditions on the detour route by slowing down and allowing greater following distances. ^IF pic.twitter.com/sBGXjLaCVx
Detour route: For northbound traffic use SH49, right onto SH4, right onto SH47 right onto SH46 and then left back onto SH1. Reverse for southbound.
Waka Kotahi is also advising of snow on State Highway 2 in the Waioeka Gorge.
"Due to snow and ice conditions, road users are advised to take extra care along this route."
New Zealand is currently being battered by an Antarctic blast with a severe weather watch advisory for heavy snow and severe gales possible for parts of central and southern New Zealand.
