Traffic is at a standstill on Fraser Street and Cameron Road in Tauranga after reports of asbestos on Oropi Road.
State Highway 29A is also backed up from the Cameron Road/Pyes Pa Road roundabout to Gargan Road.
Tauranga City Council confirms there is a closure in place on Fraser Street and Oropi Rd due to a spillage of what is believed to be asbestos.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline, Craig Cate, says Fraser Street is blocked from Yatton Street.
He spoke to a roading contractor as they were blocking of the road and was told it has been closed because of asbestos.
Craig says he could see white stuff on the road and grass verge.
He says he’s spent more than an hour and half in traffic trying to get to SH29A.
Another reader who lives on Pooles Roads says, “Loads of cars crawling up Pooles Road, apparently due to asbestos on Maleme Street”.
