Traffic is at a standstill on Fraser Street and Cameron Road in Tauranga after reports of asbestos on Oropi Road.
State Highway 29A is also backed up from the Cameron Road/Pyes Pa Road roundabout to Gargan Road.
Tauranga City Council confirms there is a closure in place on Fraser Street and Oropi Rd due to a spillage of what is believed to be asbestos.
Clean up crews are on scene, says council.
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline, Craig Cate, says Fraser Street is blocked from Yatton Street.
He spoke to a roading contractor as they were blocking of the road and was told it has been closed because of asbestos.
Craig says he could see white stuff on the road and grass verge.
He says he's spent more than an hour and half in traffic trying to get to SH29A.
Another reader who lives on Pooles Roads says, 'Loads of cars crawling up Pooles Road, apparently due to asbestos on Maleme Street”.

Interesting read but the road was blocked on Fraser St between Maleme St and Alverstone Road...so not relevant to anything on Maleme St or Oropi Road. It would have neen helpful if the signage had told us that so those of us with brains could make an informed decision about our journey. Such poor communication around closures in Tauranga recently.

Fraser Street becomes Oropi Road at the Chadwick road roundabout. The fact that Fraser Street was closed sent all traffic through Greerton, and onto all of those other roads creating gridlock . The ignorance of it on council's part was that they had known about it all day, it had been there for up to a week! They still decided to close one of the main roads out of town during peak traffic, it they had waited half an hour there would have been no problem. The road closure professionals should have know better, but they seemed to revel in what they were doing.
