A 57-year-old man has been charged with murder following a death in Hamilton last week.

A 55-year-old woman passed away on Friday following an alleged assault earlier in the week.

Police were originally called to a serious assault at a flat in Wellington Street, Hamilton East, on Wednesday afternoon.

'The woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition but sadly passed away on Friday,” says Hamilton City area commander inspector Andrea McBeth.

A 57-year-old man previously appeared in the Hamilton District Court and has been remanded in custody to re-appear on 1 October.

'On that date he will face a charge of murder, and another charge of injuring with intent which relates to an incident in April this year involving the same victim,” says Andrea.
