Severe weather watch for heavy rain

Cloudy periods are being forecast for the region today, before the rain sets in tomorrow.

A severe weather watch is being issued for the Bay of Plenty.

The MetService is forecasting heavy rain, heavy snow and severe gales for part of New Zealand today.

A deepening low and an active front are expected to move northeast across the South Island today, then over the North Island on Tuesday, says a statement from the weather organisation.

"Strong and moist northwest winds precede the front, and is followed by a strong cold southerly change.

"Warnings and Watches for heavy rain, heavy snow and severe gales are in force for many parts of southern and central New Zealand.

"People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any changes are made to these Warnings and Watches or new areas need to be added."
