Waihi Golf report for November 18 2021

Veterans' golf

- Allen Smith, Allen Sarjant, John Giffney, Ken Purcell, Mick Goodall and Alex Teesdale represented Waihi in the fourth Coromandel Shield round played on the Whangamata Titoki course on Monday November 8. At this stage, Waihi is in fifth place, with high hopes of improving their position in the next round at Te Aroha on Monday November 22. Apart from the official team playing for Waihi there were some others from Waihi giving great moral support. Hauraki's team found the course very much to their liking, while one of Waihi's players had tree trouble despite there being 176 fewer than when he had last played the course, and to add to his woes, he lost three balls in the streams that are a tricky feature of the course. Nevertheless the gap between the top scoring Hauraki and the rest is not insurmountable, and Waihi cannot resist a challenge. Go Waihi.

On Monday November 15 there were 41 players in the field playing a par round, and once again last week's green-socks champion Bill Tiffin took top prize, not so dazzling because this time the socks were black, although similarly festooned with golfing features, but they did the job. A thought for Christmas—don't groan inwardly when opening your present to find two pairs of socks. They just might be winners.

Par results—Bill Tiffin 3 up; Peter Wright 1 up; Rae Wright, Tim Parish, Willie Lynch all square; Ken Purcell, John Giffney, Mark Mora, Helen Baynes, Kerry Lewis, Brian Baynes 1 down; Nan Hoggard, John Saunders, Adrienne Lynch, Andrew McLennan, Maurice Joyce, Al McMillan, Graham Jenkins 2 down; Judy Saunders, Howard Anderson , Bob Hoggard, Roger Gudsell, Diane Lewis 3 down; Wendy Matutinovich, Adele Gunning, Rae Brown, Edna Connolly, Ross Fitness, Avon Gordon, Allen Sarjant, Jock Stronach 4 down. Twos: Michael Bonnici, Brian Baynes on 8; Edna Connolly on 15.

Women's golf—18 holes

There were just enough players in the field for our caterer Robyn to work her magic to provide another of her scrumptious irresistible selections for lunch on Wednesday November 17. The weather was a mixture of showers, wind, cloud and hot sunshine for the first nett round in the Summer Cup —spring with a vengeance.
