Bay of Plenty and Waikato have got through the opening day of the New Zealand Women's Interprovincials at Timaru Golf Club unscathed and atop the leaderboard.

They sit in equal first with two match wins today and seven games.

Bay of Plenty beat the tournament hosts Aorangi on Tuesday morning by a margin of 3 – 2 and then defeated a promising Wellington side 4 – 1 in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Canterbury beat Taranaki 4 – 1 and then defeated the tournament hosts 3 – 2 to match BOP.

BOP teed off their 2021 campaign against Aorangi this morning but was slow to get out of the blocks.

"The hosts came out swinging and were up in three matches through their first five holes," says a spokesperson for Golf NZ.

"BOP managed to swing the momentum in their direction and was ahead in three and a half matches.

"Number five Nikki Kirsopp went down in her match, but Heather Keefe and Diane Syer managed to get BOP's noses in front with victories.

"Taylor-Rose Perrett went down in the number one match, meaning it came down to ex-New Zealand representative Penny Smith to get BOP over the line.

"Smith managed to recover from a wayward opening tee shot to win 2&1.

"They were then faced with a young Wellington side in the afternoon, which all the ladies got up for.

"The only loss came from Taylor-Rose Perrett, who took Golf New Zealand National Academy member Darae Chung to the last.

Canterbury got off the mark faster against Taranaki, with the only blemish coming from number five, Melissa Newburn. Rachel Eder, Olive Tapu, Catherine Bell, and Maddie May had comfortable wins."

They were faced with a closer match against Aorangi, says Golf NZ.

"Newburn avenged her loss from the morning to get an early point on the board for the Cantabrians. With Eder and Tapu both going down, it was up to the red and black top order to bring the ladies home.

"Maddie May won her match at number one 6&5 and Catherine Bell managed to seal a 3&1 win to get her side over the line.

"Northland and Manawatu Wanganui also got through the day unscathed but had byes."
