With dumbkof2. Why bother with Youth Aid. Absolute waste of time and therefore money. Out at that hour denotes an attitude of adult entitlement so deal with in the adult court and a few days in an adult prison. Would be a far greater deterrent. Nip this behavior severely in the bud now and hopefully turn their life around. Would be interesting to see the stats of the positive changes influenced by Youth Aid/Court.

Prosecute the parents.

These kids parents should know where their kids are. The very fact that their kids are out and about at 3.00am breaking into cars shows bad parenting skills. Put them before the courts as well.

You cannot as a parent be checking your (teenage) kids every 30 minutes throughout the night. Did my kids ever sneak out? I would certainly hope not and would be mortified if I ever found out they had but the reality is, I don't actually know, and the reality is you don't categorically know if your kids did or not. We can only hope that as a parent we instilled principles that were honorably taken onboard. The hardline needs to fall directly on the kids and there will come a natural spinoff to the parents who just may not necessarily be bad parents. Most kids today do not understand 'responsibility'

This might be a deterant

Scottish courts clung to birching as a penalty for boys aged eight to 16 with greater faith than their counterparts in the rest of the United Kingdom. ... But in Scotland the penalty was 12 strokes for boys up to 13 while those aged 14 to 16 could receive a maximum of 36 strokes of a birch or heavy three-tongued tawse.
