MetService is forecasting rain ahead for the North Island this coming week.

"A subtropical low approaches the North Island from the north Tasman Sea on Tuesday, bringing moist northeasterlies and rain onto the upper North Island through to Wednesday," says a MetService spokesperson.

"The low should then weaken from late Wednesday to early Thursday." MetService say there is low confidence of warning amounts of rain in Northland on Tuesday, and then further south from southern Northland to Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne across Taupo to Taumarunui and Waitomo during Tuesday and Wednesday.

"However, the confidence increases to moderate for eastern Bay of Plenty during Wednesday." A weak cold front is forecast to move northeast over the country from Wednesday to early Thursday, followed by a ridge and settled weather.
