Update, 5pm: State Highway 29, on the Waikato side of the Kaimai Range, has reopened following an earlier crash involving two trucks.

The logs that spilled out onto the road, resulting in the highway being closed, have now been removed from the lanes.

Police thank motorists for their patience.

Earlier, 2.09pm:

Two trucks, one of which is a logging truck, have crashed on the Waikato side of the Kaimai Range on State Highway 29, spilling logs onto the road.

NZTA report that the crash is near Rapurapu Road. Emergency services are responding.

It appears one truck has clipped the other while trying to overtake, resulting in some logs being dislodged onto the road.

There are delays for traffic in both directions, as there is stop/go traffic management in place allowing traffic in only one direction at a time to pass the crash site.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the area as there are likely to be delays for at least a couple of hours.

The logging truck crash has closed the eastbound lanes SH29 Lower Kaimai range between SH28 and Hanga Rd. Contractors are on-site, and cordons are being put in place. Westbound lanes remain open.

An alternative route for eastbound traffic: divert from SH29 on SH28, turn left onto SH5 to Rotorua, turn left onto SH36 to Tauranga. Expect an additional 60 minutes to journey time.

No injuries have resulted from the crash.

Traffic is delayed in the area. Image: Google Maps.

....is one of, if not the most idealistic piece of bull to come out of the NZTA. If anything achieved at all it will be longevity of jobs within the NZTA, in an attempt to achieve the unachievable. At best it will reduce the current speed restrictions to slightly (hopefully) above walking pace, reduce further any chance of increased productivity to compare with that of the incumbent government, and, as with all insane ideas, be a waste of taxpayer money. We will all be more than open to rational ideas in regard to saving lives and reducing harm, but this is just damn' nutty.........
