More than 300 secondary school ensembles from across New Zealand will be competing in the 2022 NZCT Chamber Music Contest.

During June, the District Rounds will be held in 14 centres, from Whangārei to Invercargill.

The Bay of Plenty session will be held at Wesley Methodist Church in Tauranga on June 14.

Since its inception in 1965, the annual NZCT Chamber Music Contest has provided a platform for thousands of Kiwi secondary school students to perform.

For many young musicians this is their first experience of chamber ensemble performance.

The contest, the largest and longest running chamber music event of its kind, acts as a springboard for musicians and composers of tomorrow, encouraging participants at all stages of their musical development, to perform together and enjoy the thrill of making music.

With an impressive legacy, the NZCT Chamber Music Contest remains an important feature of New Zealand's musical calendar for secondary school students.

Many of its alumni have gone on to have very successful careers both within the field of music and beyond.

New Zealand Community Trust – NZCT - has proudly supported the contest for sixteen years, providing the essential investment that has allowed this nationwide event to continue.

Chamber Music New Zealand - CMNZ - is the leading presenter of top-quality chamber music concerts throughout New Zealand, delivering a unique experience of music that is up close, immersive, and diverse. CMNZ fosters live music by solo performers and small ensembles, as well as supports New Zealand performers and composers.

The 2022 NZCT Chamber Music Digital Challenge
Exceptionally for this year, the 2022 NZCT Chamber Music Digital Challenge will provide an opportunity for secondary school students from across New Zealand to continue to participate in chamber ensemble performance but via a digital platform. Groups will be able to participate despite any travel or limitations.

The Digital Challenge aims to be as inclusive as possible, encouraging participants of all stages of their musical development, providing the platform to perform and make music together.

Like the NZCT Chamber Contest there will be a national winner of the Challenge. From the pool of submissions, up to eight groups will be announced as semi-finalists from which the prize winners will be chosen. In addition, each ensemble will receive an adjudicator's report.

The regional finals will be held in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch on July 2. Admission to watch the district rounds and regional finals is free of charge. Tickets will be available for the national finals, set for August 6 in Auckland.
