Update 8.15pm: Police can confirm one person has died following the serious crash on the Waikato Expressway, SH1 this evening.

"The road has been closed in both directions and diversions are in place," says a police spokesperson.

"The serious crash unit will examine the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area."

Earlier 7.00pm: Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on the Waikato Expressway involving a vehicle and pedestrian.

"Police were notified at 6.23pm," says a police spokesperson.

"Diversions will be in place in the Southbound lane."
