Athletes at the Zespri AIMS Games in Tauranga have paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the final day of the games.

Throughout the day, moments of silence were held before each of the finals, with teams standing quietly to acknowledge the passing of the monarch.

"We join in sadness with Aotearoa and the rest of the Commonwealth, with the passing of our monarch Elizabeth II," wrote a Zespri AIMS Games spokesperson to the game's Facebook page on Friday morning.

"We'll be having moments of silence throughout the day before finals, remembering an amazing wahine toa."

As the matches continued, the Queen's image was shown on a giant billboard at Blake Park.

More than 25,000 athletes, officials and supporters have taken part in 23 sports codes around the city over this last week.

The premier sporting event for 11, 12 and 13 year olds is a strategic partnership between Sport Bay of Plenty, Tauranga City Council and the four Western Bay of Plenty intermediate schools.

The 2020 games were cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak, and event restrictions meant the 2021 tournament was postponed until this year.

Indoor cricket was added as the 23rd sporting code to the 2022 AIMS Games.

The netball, hockey, rugby sevens, basketball and football finals were held on Friday with the futsal final on Wednesday and the rip rugby final on Thursday.

This is the sort of respect we should be teaching the kids. Not protests and handouts because the world owes them. This is absolutely awesome. Good on you all.
