Waipuna Hospice's Katikati Charity Shop is dealing with a significant loss following an break-in.

The incident happened between the hours of 2pm on Saturday, October 29, and 9am on Monday, October 31.

Offenders caused extensive damage to the back entrance of the shop and managers office, causing considerable loss to the shop.

This has come at great sadness to the shop manager and volunteers, discovering the outcome of the event earlier this week.

They are terribly shocked and disappointed that someone would cause destruction to an organisation who works to help those with life limiting illnesses, and volunteers have been uneasy knowing their vulnerability at times like these.

The incident has not only impacted those who work with Waipuna Hospice, but also those in the community who have contributed to the organisation.

The loss experienced will mean less contributions can go to where donors had intended it to, coming at great regret to the team and the community.

A damaged door.

'It is with considerable sadness that we must contend with those that put more value on their own needs above those affected by life limiting illness,” says retail business manager James Turner.

'Although we can have empathy towards someone whose life experiences makes this acceptable, it is difficult to accept the harm this does to our team and community.

'Every hard-earned dollar we have lost was raised from the goodwill of our community and it is the loss of this we feel deepest.”

Waipuna Hospice has reopened and is continuing with business as usual.

They are grateful for the kindness and patience of the Katikati community in this time, but also urge those in the community to be on high alert for criminal activity and to stay safe.

The charity shop's security systems have been damaged because of the incident. They would be grateful for contributions from the community to repair the damages to ensure their store is secure.

If you have any information regarding this break in, please contact Katikati Police, 78 Main Road, Main Highway Katikati, on 07 549 0004.

WHY would anybody target THIS shop?

It is donated, mostly second-hand stuff, and it is serving a noble purpose for everybody. I think this is "personal". Somebody has a real or imagined grudge against the Hospice. I hope they are caught and we get to hear their story... before they are jailed.
