The man facing charges after an armed offenders stand-off at a Rotorua bank still cannot be named and will undergo a mental health assessment.

The 35-year-old appeared at Rotorua District Court on Friday, where he faces seven charges of kidnapping, plus charges of threatening to kill/commit grievous bodily harm.

He was initially granted interim name suppression when he appeared before a Justice of the Peace at Rotorua District Court on November 11.

The charges all stem from an incident on Thursday, November 10, at Rotorua's BNZ Bank on Amohau St.

In court, no pleas were entered through the man's lawyer Moana Dorset, who asked her client undergo a Section 38.1a mental health assessment before his next appearance.

Dorset requested continued name suppression until an assessment had been completed.

Dorset and her client appeared before Judge Christina Cook by AV link and the man was remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance on February 2, 2023.

Judge Cook agreed to extend name suppression, which was also agreed to by police and mental health representatives in court.
