State Highway 36 has reopened following an earlier crash.

SH36 between Tauranga and Ngongotaha was closed in both directions following a crash early on Saturday morning. 

Police responded to reports of a single vehicle crash on Pyes Pa Road just south of Keenan Road at 3.30am.

"One person was trapped in the vehicle but has since been extracted and assessed with serious injuries," says a police spokesperson.

SH36 was closed from the time of the crash, between Merrick Rd and Keenan Rd.

The road reopened at 5.40am.
