State Highway 5 at Whakarewarewa south of Rotorua has reopened following a fatal crash on Sunday morning.

The crash, involving two vehicles, was reported to Police at 5.05am.

A second person sustained serious injuries.

The road remained closed for some time and motorists were asked to take alternative routes.

The highway has now reopened.

Police thank motorists for their patience and cooperation while the road was closed.
