Milk tanker rolls on SH27

UPDATED 10.41AM: Motorists using a busy link road between Auckland and Tauranga are being warned to expect delays after a milk tanker crashed and rolled on to its side in Matamata this morning.

Senior Sergeant Mike Underwood says emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on Matamata's Firth St about 9.30am.

'Initial reports are a milk tanker and trailer has crashed through a fence of a property and rolled and the driver of the tanker has been taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance."

The driver has suffered moderate injuries.

'The recovery of the tanker and its load will require heavy salvage equipment and is expected to take some time. To compound issues further, this part of Firth St is part of SH27 and is favoured by a lot of heavy transport operators transiting between the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Auckland.”

Mike says at this point northbound traffic is being allowed to continue along SH27 while southbound traffic is being diverted from Broadway through Burwood Rd and motorists should expect delays.

Earlier:

A milk tanker carrying 7000 litres of milk has crashed on State Highway 27, near Matamata.

Emergency services are at the scene on highway, near Beatty Road.

It's reported that milk was leaking and firefighters have put in measures to stop the milk getting into the waterway.

The driver has been removed from the wreckage and is being assessed by paramedics.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

This is the second crash in two days after two trucks crashed on SH24, southeast of Matamata, yesterday morning.

A two-truck crash was reported on the Mangawhero bridge, 2kms out of the township at 5.25am.

Police say one lane of the bridge was blocked as emergency services dealt with the crash.

No injuries were reported, but there were delays as heavy tow contractors needed to remove the trucks from the scene.
