Dancing pad for The Strand

Tauranga is only the second city in the world to get its very own Dance-O-Mat – thanks to Trustpower which is donating the machine in thanks for the welcome the utility company received on its recent move to the CBD.

The dance floor slab's been poured on The Strand reclamation, and the washing machine sized Dance-O-Mat will be open for impromptu dance parties by the end of the week.

Christchurch's Dance-O-Mat has proved popular

'We're delighted to have moved to the CBD and we wanted to do something really positive and fun to thank everyone in the city for being so welcoming,” says Trustpower chief executive officer Vince Hawksworth.

Trustpower's Community Relations Manager, Graeme Purches, saw first-hand how much people loved the world's first Dance-O-Mat in Christchurch.

It was intended to bring life and energy back to the Christchurch CBD post-quake, and it certainly delivered on that promise, attracting thousands of people including Prince Charles and Camilla when they visited New Zealand on their 2012 Royal Jubilee tour.

'Graeme suggested it would be perfect for Tauranga, bringing people from all walks of life together and helping to brighten up the downtown area. We all agreed, and we are looking forward to seeing people stepping out in style down on the waterfront,” says Vince.

Tauranga's dance-o-mat will be ready by the end of the week.

The Dance-O-Mat is a coin-operated dance floor that anyone can use. Pop $2 in the slot of the modified laundromat machine, plug in an iPod or phone, put it on play, and dance to your own music for half an hour.

Tauranga's Dance-O-Mat will be located on The Strand opposite Masonic Park.

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby said that the presence of more than 500 Trustpower staff is a huge boost for the CBD, and that the Dance-O-Mat is a very generous gift that locals and visitors can enjoy.

'The Dance-O-Mat is a fitting way to celebrate Trustpower's arrival in the CBD and symbolic of the kind of energy Trustpower has brought to our city,” says Stuart.

Thanks but

I would have preferred Trustpower to have paid the typical parking impact money paid by other new buildings. That would have helped ratepayers who are now going to have to cough up for a new parking building

Meanwhile at home

I'll have my very own dance-oh-mat ready here when Trustpower reduce my power bill.

How on earth did this dance o mat donated by trust power pass Council approval ? I would be concerned as to the overall security of this public amenity .

Get those thug shades off Stuart and have a good look around. No boost is there? Just no where to park and no people on the streets.

DANCING TO A DIFFERENT TUNE

You need people to create an atmosphere. Then, just maybe they might dance. I hope TCC have thought of the Health and Safety implications of having people on a piece of equipment without health and safety vests on. Or maybe they wear their day glow jackets. As long as they've got their clipboards we might have a good old knees up! Love to give a few of them a "twirl".

So true, hiding behind the shades so as the truth can not get a look in. Got to keep it all lovely, glossy and happy ... happy ... happy ...

Yes about $25 million more in debt that should not be there, crazy thing isn't it.

What approval? No one saw a thing, no one in the public was asked, some official would have taken the liberty and just rubber stamped it .... just like that.
