Dolphins to walk up the Mount

It's not possible for 55 Maui dolphins to climb Mauao, surely? Wrong.

A pod of dolphins will be swimming, or striding, up the Mount in 55 minutes on Friday, May 27, from 3.30pm. Yes, they might have legs and might also be humans but it's still impressive and all for a good cause.

Students from Waikato University are on a mission to raise money for the smallest species of dolphins in the world.

A recent estimate shows that they are approximately just 55 individuals over one year of age.

'The aim is to get 55 students up and down the Mount in 55 minutes,” says member of Waikato Student Union and event organiser Joe Lowe.

'Waikato Students' Union is led by passionate students who want to take a stand on issues like this but it isn't just about one organisation it's about all students and recognising we are probably the last generation who can stand up for the Maui Dolphin.”

The event is part of WWF's Challenge 55 scheme where the nation is encouraged to partake in a challenge that's linked with the number 55. From cycling 55 kilometers or baking 55 cakes for a cake sale.

Those taking part in the Maui Mount challenge will be wearing 'super sweet fin caps” and other dolphin accessories. There will be a prize for the best dressed.

Anyone can register to join in, you don't have to be a student or even dress up as a dolphin. All money raised will go towards WWF New Zealand.

Well it beats painting on a bedsheet and blocking traffic, I guess.
